All-Purpose Cleaning Tools
If you take your cleaning seriously, you’ll need a pressure washer. They’re versatile tools that can be used for a range of outdoor cleaning tasks, from hosing down your patio to quickly cleaning your car. This versatility can be a bit overwhelming if you’re new to pressure washing, as there is an incredible number of different features, nozzles, and accessories to consider. If you’re not sure which kit is best for you, keep reading – our simple buyer’s guide will help you make the right choice.
Water Pressure
The way pressure washers work is quite simple. They use a mechanical compressor to increase water pressure, allowing you to spray a powerful, highly targeted jet of water. So, naturally, the water pressure is one of the first things you should look for in a pressure washer. It’s measured in bar – the higher the bar, the more pressure your washer can generate. While the absolute most powerful jet washer isn’t necessary for domestic cleaning jobs – around 150 bar should be more than enough for washing down your patio or car – it’s still a good idea to get the most powerful you can afford. This is particularly useful if you plan to use your pressure washer for snow foaming, as you’ll need high water pressure to generate thick snow foam.
Flow Rate
Equally important to your pressure washer is a fast flow rate. Flow rate measures the amount of water your pressure washer can move, and is usually measured in litres per hour. Having a high maximum flow rate will give you more flexibility when using your washer. It allows you to switch between a focused, high-pressure jet or a gentler, wider spray of water for cleaning a large area.
Pump Mechanism
All pressure washers need a pump mechanism to build up the water pressure enough to create a high-pressure jet. As you might expect, compressing high volumes of water and moving them at high speed is hard work, and results in a lot of wear and tear on the internal workings of your washer. No pressure washer lasts forever, but you will want one with a durable pump mechanism that lasts as long as possible. Pro-Kleen’s pressure washers feature hard-wearing aluminium pumps, which makes them perfect for intensive or regular use. Aluminium is the ideal material for the job as it’s tough, flexible, and resistant to rust and corrosion, so you can always rely on it to deliver peak performance.
Hose Length
An often-forgotten feature when shopping around for a pressure washer is hose length. Put simply, if the hose on your washer is too short, you might find it hard to reach certain tricky spots! A standard 5m hose is fine for most places, but if you know your water source is in a tricky spot you may want to look for a longer 8m hose. This will give you much more flexibility to move around every side of your car, for example, or to jet wash a high wall.
Attachments
Most pressure washers come with a basic gun that has a few different nozzle settings. These settings will allow you to choose between a narrow, focused jet of water or a gentler, wider spray. However, you can also find more specialist attachments to help you carry out a range of different tasks. These range from brushes to snow foam lances and more. Above, you’ll find a range of different kits which come packaged with a range of different attachments to help you with home and garden cleaning jobs. Below, we’ll walk you through some of the most popular attachments that’ll help you tackle almost any cleaning job.
Brush Attachments
If you’re dealing with stubborn dirt, mould, or algae on your patio, a jet of water might not be enough to lift it away on its own. A brush attachment will help add a little extra cleaning power for those persistent stains, allowing you to agitate the dirt to help loosen it as the pressurised water jet blasts it clean. There are actually two main types of brush you can find above, the first being a simple fixed brush that clips onto the end of your pressure gun. You can also find a rotary brush, which will spin as the jet of water passes through it to provide extra-intensive cleaning for cars, walls, and patios.
Snow Foam Lances
If you want to snow foam your car, you need a snow foam lance. Snow foam is what’s called a pre-wash – a treatment that’s applied before your main car shampoo. It helps make your car shampoos even better by reducing the appearance of post-wash streaks and swirls. These are actually tiny scratches caused by dirt particles being dragged across your paintwork. As snow foam lifts most of the dirt away from your car, it makes your contact washes much more effective.
A snow foam lance gives you everything you need to get satisfyingly thick snow foam. They’ll agitate the liquid into a clingy foam that’ll stick to your car paintwork. The Pro-Kleen lance included in the kits above also includes an adjustable nozzle and air intake valve, so you can get a perfect consistency.
Turbo Nozzle
Want more power? A turbo nozzle does just that! Put simply, it narrows the jet of water into a more focused – and therefore, more powerful – stream. It’s essential for any really heavy-duty cleaning, when you just want the most raw power available to blast dirt away.
Patio Cleaning Attachment
This handy attachment is perfect for cleaning those tricky crevices on your patio or decking. It helps you direct the pressure washer’s power more effectively by channelling the jet stream directly onto your patio. It’s great for powering away dirt between paving slabs or decking planks.
