First of all, urinal incontinence is not an illness but a manifestation that could be caused by different factors and can be dealt with incontinence pads.
At HSDonline, we understand that it may be difficult to mention this medical problem to anyone and therefore we've chosen to summarise in order to help reassure you and also explain to you what type of solutions may be suitable if required. HSDonline is going to look at the following topics:
- Bladder weakness = Uncontrollable loss of urine
- Statistics about Incontinence
- Incontinence aids
- Treatments of incontinence
Incontinence: A common problem
Bladder weakness = Uncontrollable loss of urine
- Incontinence is due to an uncontrollable and involuntary loss of urine, the bladder has become weak.
- The so called "Stress or Effort Incontinence", is caused by insufficient strength of the pelvic floor muscles. It causes loss of a small amount of urine triggered by a physical effort such as coughing or even sneezing.
- Incontinence can be also provoked by a vesicle instability.
- 75% of people suffering from incontinence are women.
- After pregnancy incontinence problems may arise because childbirth weakens the pelvic floor muscles, which can cause an over-active bladder.
Statistics about Incontinence
- More than 3 million women are affected. Certain studies suggest the figure could be even as high as 6 million.
- Incontinence can cause psychological issues because a lot of people are too embarrassed to mention this condition.
- It affects approximately 20% to 30% of women aged less than 30.
- It affects 20% to 35% of the women who haven’t given birth.
- It is around the age of 50 that women are most affected by incontinence.
- It affects up to 50% of the female elderly population.
Incontinence aids
Managing incontinence is an everyday challenge for millions of people across the world. The most popular method to tackle the problem, also recommended by medical experts, is the use of incontinence pants and other absorbency products. Our absorbency pads are measured by the severity of the problem: the amount of urine or faecal passed by the user. More information about the absorbency and levels of incontinence can be found here: levels of incontinence. Therefore, it's recommended that sufferers speak to a nurse or a trained individual to find the right incontinent product to suit the needs. Our comprehensive trained advisors or our on duty nurses will be delighted to help you and listen to you, call 0800 091 3171
Treatments of incontinence
-Perineum muscle "re-education":
- Begins the treatment with muscular exercises of the pelvic floor in order to re-build the perineum. It is usually tried before surgery.
-Treatment by oestrogens:
- Use of oestrogens to treat incontinence is controversial, with medical opinion divided on the effectiveness of such treatment.
-Duloxetine treatment:
- This treatment has been approved in Europe but not in the US, because of side effects.
-Surgical treatment of the Incontinence:
- A urethral sling procedure restores bladder control for women who suffer from stress incontinence. A thin mesh ribbon lifts the bladder neck to a normal opposition. Over 85% of women report significant improvements after this operation in first intention.
- As with all surgery it is not without risk. This treatment contains operative and post-operative risks such as:
- urinary, vaginal and digestive wounds,
- vaginal perforation,
- vesicle retention,
- urinary infection.
Hygienic-dietary recommendations: In case of overweight, the loss of weight improves incontinence.
