While you may be sold on the idea of keeping your car nice and clean, you could be questioning whether the additional effort of waxing it is really necessary, after all, your car already has a protective top coat, doesn’t it?
Well, we would argue that it really is worth taking that extra step, and here are 7 reasons why:
- Wax protects the clear coat
While your car does indeed have a clear coat of protection on its paintwork, this will wear over time. The purpose of this coat is to protect the layers of colour underneath from environmental contaminants including UV rays, acid rain, salt from the roads, bird droppings etc. Adding a layer of wax preserves the clear coat, thereby protecting paintwork from fading, discolouration, and weather damage.
- Wax protects against scratching
Your car is not just vulnerable to scratching from bumps and scrapes while driving, the biggest culprit is often the dirt and grime that accumulates on the surface. These tiny particles can cause micro scratches when they are passed over the paintwork. This often happens, ironically, when cleaning the car. Wax not only adds an extra barrier but makes your car’s surface super smooth so that the dirt can be wiped away without affecting the paintwork. - Wax helps your car stay cleaner
The smooth surface that wax creates also makes it harder for dirt particles to attach to your car so as well as making it easier to remove them, as per point number 2, you will find that they don’t adhere quite so easily in the first place.
- Wax makes your car look amazing!
While there are many practical benefits in terms of protection, we would be doing wax a disservice if we didn’t mention how amazingly shiny and gorgeous it makes your car look! Applying wax will give you a finish that you simply cannot get from washing alone, keeping it looking like it’s fresh from the showroom. If you are a car enthusiast, this is important.
- Wax keeps your car in great condition for longer
Nothing quite ages the look of your car like the dulling effect of micro scratches and the fading of the paintwork. Even if you are a careful driver and manage to keep the bodywork in good shape, regular waxing will significantly extend the lifetime of your car by keeping the paintwork in top condition. - Wax maintains the resale value
Waxing also makes good economic sense as cars in great condition will command a higher resale value when it comes time to trade it in for something new. Both prospective new owners and dealerships will pay more for vehicles that have been cared for well.
- Waxing your car is probably less effort than you think
While the premise of this article is to tell you that waxing is worth the extra effort, in reality, it may not be as laborious a task as you imagine. Yes, a natural wax like carnauba does require some buffing in (though the reward is a really high end finish), there are many synthetic waxes available that come in liquid or sprayable form and are therefore easier and faster to apply and don’t require a second buff. You can even buy shampoo that contains wax to make the job even more streamlined.
