7 Ideas for Thoughtful Tokens of Your Appreciation on Mother’s Day
Whether you think Mother’s Day is a lovely opportunity to celebrate mums and mother figures or a cynical commercialised event created by card companies, most can agree that our mums don’t tend to get the appreciation that they really deserve so whether you go big and spend a fortune or mark the occasion in a more personal and understated way, showing our mums that they are loved is never a bad thing.
We have put together a number of ideas for gifts that don’t quite fit the usual offerings of flowers and chocolates. They suit a range of budgets and are intended to be a little more thoughtful than some more obvious gifts.
New Hobby
A lovely idea for a gift that can continue to offer ongoing enjoyment is something that can spark a new hobby. It could be a course of classes such as art, pottery, or learning a language or an item that can be used to take up something new such as a telescope, metal detector, or musical instrument

Prepare a Meal
Preparing a meal probably isn’t that radical an idea for many, especially if you host your mum all the time, but if this isn’t something you would normally do, it can be a lovely thing. If you are not a confident cook, it doesn’t have to be something difficult or elaborate; it could even be a meal kit from a supermarket or one of the online meal boxes where all the ingredients are included and everything is measured out for you. Why not focus on something you know she likes but doesn’t eat often or try to recreate something you’ve eaten together, such as a meal from a holiday?
Fragrance
Perfume is a fairly standard gift idea but often outside the budget of many. However, there are other ways that you can gift fragrance that also involve a bit of thought. The scent is very much linked to health and well-being with the principle of aromatherapy based around fragrances eliciting certain responses. For example, vanilla, jasmine, and bergamot are thought to boost mood. Rose, lavender, and sandalwood aid sleep. And lemon, peppermint, and rosemary can energise. By choosing candles, incense, or toiletries with scents that you think would be beneficial to your mum, you are giving something that could really make a difference.

Growing Kit
This follows the same logic as the previous item but is good for people who may not have a lot of time to dedicate to a new hobby. A plant-growing kit, such as herbs, tomatoes, chillis etc is something that has longevity but isn’t too demanding. With Mother’s Day happening in March at the start of spring, this is the perfect time to start propagating many different types of plants and a kit spells it all out, just in case your mum isn’t that green-fingered. Plus, with a vegetable growing kit, you have the added bonus of harvesting your own produce!
Heated Throw
A heated throw is a lovely thing on a cold evening anyway but in a cost-of-living crisis, it can represent much more. It can allow you to turn the central heating down and you can take it up to bed to keep you warm at night. And while heated blankets may have had a bit of a fuddy-duddy perception previously, modern heated throws can be colourful as well as soft and fluffy, so they coordinate with interiors and are perfect for creating a cosy vibe. This is, therefore, a gift that is practical, decorative, and can help your mum save money on energy bills.

‘Jobs’ Vouchers
This is a great idea for anyone who lives with their mum, especially teenagers and children. While, of course, we should all be doing our fair share around the house, mums often end up doing the most for us. This is a cost-free gift that could actually be the most appreciated of all. Simply make up some vouchers for the kinds of jobs that will make mum’s life easier, such as making tea, unloading the dishwasher, cleaning the bathroom etc. Instead of doing a load of tasks like this on Mother’s Day, let her decide when they would make her life the easiest and ‘cash them in’ at a time of her choosing (and you really know you should be doing more of them anyway!).
Create a Relaxing Outdoor Space
If your mum enjoys spending her time outdoors and relaxing in the garden and you are looking to splash out on a gift this year, then why not consider creating a comfortable outdoor space where she can relax and soak in the fresh air with some new garden furniture? Benches are perfect for even those gardens that have limited space as they can sit nicely beneath the window or if you have a little more space to work with then a bistro set might be just what you are looking for, it’s perfect for both relaxing or enjoying a nice meal outside!
