When you’re in your house or in your office, the last thing you want to see is huge rats entering your premises in the hopes of finding something tasty to nibble on. Unfortunately, though, it’s a sight which is all too familiar for some. Yet, despite the sheer number that the little critters make up – estimated to be in the 90 million ball park in Britain alone – there are measures you can take to ensure they don’t infiltrate your space. Looking for some of the best tips and tricks? Then check out our useful guide!
1. Don’t Leave Rubbish Piled Up
One of the most common things that can draw rats into households is a build-up of unwanted food or general rubbish. Do always remember to properly cover bins, ensuring that the lid completely closes, and that no food waste is seeping out of the sides. On a side note, take care if you grow fruit in your garden. Once they’re ripe and have fallen off the tree, lift the food before any vermin get a whiff of it. Food and shelter are two of the most important things that the rodent requires, and if you don’t ensure that you’ve correctly disposed of your rubbish, you may find that you’ve unwittingly provided a nice, cozy home for your new intruder…
2. Set Traps for The Rats
So, you’ve left it too late and now a rat has invaded the premises. What do you do? Well, first thing you should think about doing is purchasing a rat trap. These little problem solvers come in many different forms, ranging from clamp traps to electronic traps. What’s more, they are all effective in their own way depending on how you wish to dispose of your unwanted visitor. Whether it’s strangulation, electrocution, or death – there are many different traps for you to make use of when it comes to getting a rat out of your abode.
3. Dispose of Them Compassionately
If our last tip sounds a little too grim for your liking, always bear in mind that there are more humane ways of dealing with the problem. For one, you could use a humane rat trap. This contraption will lure in the furry fiend if you place foods on it such as fruit, vegetables, cheese and more. However, instead of quickly killing the hapless creature, it will instead restrain it – as exemplified by this fully kitted out trap and cage. Once it enters, it will be trapped, allowing you to release it back to the outdoors.
4. ‘Poised’ and Ready
Of course, if you simply want to take care of the problem without getting your hands dirty, your best bet is to use a rat poison. The safest way to do this is to set the substance inside a bait station such as Rotech’s ingenious Tunnel Rat Bait Station. This way, the rat will be poisoned in a controlled setting, and may even perish far away from your vicinity. Do be warned though: be careful using it if there are other animals in the area. Nevertheless, this is the ideal route to go down if you’d rather not be startled by the sound of a rat trap crushing its victim…
5. Nestled Up Together
If the situation has become dire and rats have begun to nest in your vicinity, try not to panic – there are steps which can be taken to exterminate them. To start, mix together some bleach and water in a spray bottle. Then, proceed to spray any area that looks like it could be an unwanted lair for the rodent (e.g. a dark area made up of paper, cloth, and other soft matter). Not only will the bleach disinfect any potential chemical diseases passed through the air, but it will also allow you to sweep up the nest area more effectively. Oh, and do make sure to clean up any rat droppings too while you’re at it…
