Make Even Small Bathrooms Feel Bigger with These Simple Tips
You might not even realise it, but your bathroom is one of the most commonly used rooms in your home. You’ll be in there first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and so you want it to be as relaxing as it possibly can be. For a room that you spend so much time in, our bathrooms tend to be on the small side, but often it’s not affordable or practical to get the builders in. Luckily, there are plenty of ways that you can make your bathroom feel bigger without spending a fortune!
1. Use Floating Units
Replace all your free-standing bathroom furniture with wall-mounted ‘floating’ units. This will allow a bit more light to bounce around underneath your bathroom cabinets. It might not sound like much, but this extra ray of sunshine can make all the difference! In a pinch, you can also store things like bathroom scales out of sight under your cabinet, too.
2. Get a Big Mirror
Make your bathroom mirror as big as you possibly can so it takes up as much of your bathroom wall as possible. Using mirrors to make a room look bigger is the oldest trick in the book, and it’ll work wonders with your bathroom!
3. Let Natural Light In
Make the most of your shiny new mirror by ditching the curtains or blinds and letting the sunlight bounce around your bathroom. Most bathrooms already have frosted glass, so you won’t need to worry about privacy – the best tool for making your bathroom feel bigger is shining up in the sky every day, so make sure you use it to your advantage!
4. White on White
It makes sense to make your bathroom’s colour scheme as bright as possible, and white is the brightest colour there is! Mixing subtly different white tones using different materials (tiling, lino, and painted walls, for example) will really help bounce the light around your bathroom and make it feel much bigger and airier.
5. Raise Your Shower Curtain…
Raise your shower curtain rail as high as you possibly can to make the most of the vertical space in your room. A low curtain rail that’s too close to eye level can make your bathroom feel small and boxy, so raise it to the roof if you can.
6. …Or Use a Clear Shower Door
Frosted glass in your shower door can make it feel like there’s a barrier in your bathroom, dividing the space into two. Try and get a clear shower door with a minimal frame to make your whole bathroom – including the shower seem much more open.
7. Clean Up
Nothing makes a bathroom feel smaller than having dusty, dirty, and discoloured surfaces covered in mildew. Avoid that dingy look by thoroughly cleaning up your bathroom surfaces and grouting using some mould and mildew remover and grout cleaner to keep your surfaces looking fresh and bright.
8. Make Your Lines Longer
If you have one wall that’s longer than the others, try and emphasise it with a longer shelf or large bathroom unit. If there’s no space to put anything there, you can add some patterns to the wall, such as a thin strip of tiling or a painted stripe. This will help draw the eye along the largest wall of your bathroom and will make the most of the space you have.
9. Make Everything Slim
Whenever you buy anything to put in your bathroom, make sure it’s as slim and streamlined as possible. This will mean it doesn’t stick out as much when you put it against the wall so you have a wide open space in the middle of your bathroom. If you already have all your bathroom furniture, cabinets, and so on, make sure they’re pushed up snugly against the wall so they stick out as little as possible.
10. Put Bath Mats and Towels Away Properly
Having bath mats and towels draped around the place can really make your bathroom feel small. Put bath mats away when you’re not using them, and while it’s not practical to store away wet towels, you can hang them up neatly along your bathroom wall with a towel rail. For a touch of luxury, you could even look at a stylish heated towel rail!
